Recovery

Recovery from drug addiction is a prolonged process that asks for a methodical approach under the supervision of a trained medical personal. The time that the recovery from drug addiction takes entirely depends upon the degree of addiction or in other words, the extent of dependency upon drug or substance of abuse.

When an individual gets addicted to drugs or other substance of abuse, the addict gets into a world of hallucination that apparently is extremely boisterous – at least apparently. The addict never considers that the addiction will gradually take him or her to a slow and steady death. Hence, whenever these individuals are challenged, they get into a denial mode and go onto exemplify how right they are and how wrongfully everyone is up against them. The first step of recovery from drug addiction is bringing these hapless addicts out of this denial mode. This is called interventional, which is an extremely risky job as a single false step will put the entire process of treatment in jeopardy. At times, the addict turn violent and in those cases, what the situation need is a professional approach to tackle the situation. Hence, only a professional interventionist should get into the act and slowly convince the addict that all is not right with him or her and what he or she needs is immediate medical attention.

Once the addict succumbs to the tactics of an interventionist and discloses his or her addiction, the real treatment begins. The addict should be taken to the nearest rehab center where the individual will be subjected to a series of treatment by a team of experienced medical practitioners for a prolonged period of time. The time required for the treatment will depend upon the extent of addiction, which will also determine whether the addict would require in house treatment for an outpatient treatment.

The road to recovery is never easy. It involves a series of medication, mental counseling, various types of constructive activities – in group or individual and last but not the least, a willingness from the patient’s part to come out of the grip of addiction. Counseling is done to make the addict mentally strong and have the self belief back so that the individual will not get back to addiction at any later stage of life after full recovery from drug and substance abuse.

Recovery from drug and substance abuse is a collective process wherein the family members of the addicts should play an extremely important part. They should not lose hope – cooperate with the medical personnel to shun the sources of addiction and be as strict to the addict as possible to make sure that the individual realizes the gravity of the situation and understands the fact that only a complete recovery from the grip of drug will find him a place amongst his or her near and dear ones.
